Welcome to Character Appreciation, a blog series that will run for the whole year alongside Project 10. Each week we'll take a look at one Total Drama character, what we like and dislike about them, how they've grown, and what we hope to see from them in the future. I'm ScrawnyLittleWhiteBoy, and this week, we'll be appreciating the Normal Guy, Dave!
Dave was introduced with the rest of the third generation contestants, in the premiere of Total Drama Pahkitew Island. Among the wacky cast of wizards, princesses, beatboxers, evil villains, and pagenat queens, Dave immediately stands out as being just a run of the mill, normal guy. We see that he is very critical of others, and is easily frustrated and annoyed. He also very quickly proves that he is highly germaphobic. As early as the first episode, Dave develops strong feelings for one of his teammates, which grows exponentially as time goes on, quickly becoming an obsession, and causes him to lose sight of practically everything else, openly not caring about the money, and obliviously breaking Ella's heart when she develops a crush on him. As time goes on however, Dave and Sky grow closer together, though Sky remains hesitant on a relationship, which seems to only make Dave try harder, as he starts to show signs of instability in his alleged "normal" mind. Things take a turn for the worse when Sky is moved to the opposing team, and in the next episode, makes the ultimate choice that the game is more important to her than he is. This leaves Dave totally crushed and depressed, but after some some encouragement from a friend, he becomes determined to prove that he is a hardcore competitor. Come the merge in the next episode, Dave's focus becomes beating Sky, and when he manages to do so in the eating challenge, proceeds to rub it in, hoping it will better his odds, only to be rejected by her in front of everyone. Depressed and hopeless, Dave campaigns for his own elimination, not wanting to stay on the island now that his chances with Sky were shattered.
However, Dave would later return as Sky's helper in the finale, only to be disappointed yet again upon finding out that Sky had not wanted him to be her helper. However, Sky makes a bold choice, and kisses Dave, in a successful attempt to inspire him, telling him that she does in fact like him back, and does not want to be distracted by him. This gives Dave newfound inspiration, and he becomes determined to win the challenge for Sky, to the point where he broke down in tears upon thinking he had failed. However, the two manage to stay in the race, and end up neck and neck with Shawn and Jasmine. However, Dave's world comes crashing down when Chris reveals through Sky's audition tape that she has a boyfriend back at home. Feeling betrayed, Dave finally snaps, and loses all of the sanity that was already slipping away. With his newfound hatred for the girl he once was obsessed with, he becomes determined to ensure her and Shawn's failure so that he could burn the money in front of her. However, his hopes are crushed when the winner crosses the finish line. To add insult to injury, when Chris closes the season off from his helicopter, he, Shawn, Jasmine, and even Sky take off, leaving the once normal Dave bald and depressed on the island, with a certain inhabitant there to stay with him.
Dave gets a lot of hate in the fandom, and it is not hard to see why. He's obviously not a great person. Personally, I enjoy his character. Prior to him losing his mind, I think he has very relatable attributes, such as his germaphobia, and being frequently annoyed with all the wacky nutcases that Total Drama Pahkitew Island had on board. However, after his sanity was fired out the Cannon of Shame, he become much less relatable. However, he was still intriguing to watch, in my opinion.
Dave typically is given the blame for the hot steaming mess that is Skave, though Sky gets more than her share of flack too. I would say he is arguable more to blame, but his side of the story is very tragic. Sky becomes the only thing he cares about, but at the end, everything comes crashing down for him. Perhaps if he could return for another season, he might get the happy ending that he may or may not deserve, or perhaps he would only slip further into insanity and antagonism. Personally, I would more enjoy seeing a redemption arc for him, but maybe that's just me.
