"Welcome back, racers, to another week of ‘The Ridonculous Race To Name The Place!’ If you’re just joining us, here’s the idea: each week we’re revealing a background still from the upcoming Fresh TV series The Ridonculous Race and challenging all of you Fresh fans to figure out where in the world the contestants are headed! Then we’ll reveal the answer here on re:fresh with a little background info about the background! So put on a cup of tea because this week’s answer is Darjeeling! Darjeeling is a city in West Bengal, a state in India. It began development as a town in the mid-19th century when the colonial British chose the steep mountain slopes as the site for military depot and long term medical care facility. In the process several tea plantations were started on those very slopes and Darjeeling has been known for its world famous variety of teas ever since! Darjeeling tea is available in black, green, white and oolong tea varieties. It’s well known for it’s light colour and flowery scent. Depending on when the tea is harvested the flavour can vary from very light and mildly astringent to spicier and fuller. Based on the quality and size of the tea leaves they can receive several different grades from SFTGFOP for Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe all the way down the a simple D for Dust! The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway maintains old fashioned steam locomotives for tourists between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling and is considered a World Heritage Site. Also known as ‘the Toy Train’, it runs on a narrow gauge railway just 61 centimeters across – that’s only two feet for our American readers! Along the way you’ll find Ghum Railway Station, the highest train station in India! From there you can reach the summit, called Tiger Hill, known for a breathtaking view where you can see both Mount Everest and Mt. Kangchenjunga at once on a clear day! Check back next week for another installment of ‘The Ridonculous Race To Name The Place!’ Stay fresh, Brendan"
