After a huge flood, the campers float away to a "deserted island" and try to fend for themselves while dealing with the dangers there, as well as enduring each other. Meanwhile, the hosts are having a day of relaxation on the same island. While the final four are separated at first, they eventually wind up back together again and, after someone's mental breakdown, an inanimate object is eliminated.

Plot[]

It's raining at Camp Wawanakwa as the episode opens with Chris saying that it was a hard thing to do, but somehow the production crew managed to make it rain because Chris thought the rest of the campers were taking it way too easy with all the nice weather. He gets angry after almost getting struck by lightning. In the cabins Duncan, Gwen and Heather are lounging around. Gwen and Heather are, of course, getting on each other's nerves, while Duncan is carving a stick and enjoying their bickering, saying it gives him "warm fuzzies," which prompts Heather to call Duncan a "perv." Gwen then glares at Heather, prompting Heather to remind her that pouting is not going to bring Leshawna back. Chris speaks over the loudspeaker and gives the weather forecast as "rain, rain, and more rain, followed by rain." He also announces that tomorrow's activities have been canceled in favor of a trip to the arts and crafts tent. Duncan comments that even Owen couldn't find anything positive in this weather, when he suddenly notices that Owen is nowhere to be found.

TDI Owen

Woohoo! Final four, baby! Yeah! You know, I really like the other three. They're solid competitors. We all have a real trust thing going, which is why it's a good thing no one knows about the junk food I'm stashing. Okay, they'll probably be mad, but not as steamed as Chef when he finds out I was raiding his pantry… Oh! Darn it! There's something about this confessional that just makes me wanna confess stuff!

WateredCampers

Duncan, Heather and Gwen wake up to a flood.

The other three campers go to bed. During the night, the rain begins to wash away parts of the camp. The next morning, the rain has stopped and Chef rings the breakfast bell, but no one answers. Chris drives up to the main lodge to ask Chef if he's seen the campers and he says no, which is a shame because he's peeled a bag of rotten potatoes for them. Chris looks around and notices that not only are the campers missing, but so are their cabins. Chris suggests a meal, to which Chef asks if he really wants to eat "this slop," referring to the potatoes. Chris thinks they should go to craft services, which Chef agrees to. At the cabin, Duncan wakes up and leaves his cabin, only to walk right into the middle of Lake Wawanakwa. Just behind him, Gwen and Heather are sleeping in their bunk bed, only to wake up and roll out into the water. The three have little time to consider their plight as they see freshwater sharks circling them and race to the boys' cabin, just in time to see the bunk bed being eaten. All the while, Owen is still in the confessional.

So I snuck in and ate the entire soccer team's bake sale. I mean, the whole sale. But I got caught on account of the icing in my hair. My mom made me pay for it out of my allowance, but mmh, those soccer moms make a mean brownie. (laughs) I'm hungry.

Owen then tries to leave the confessional, but discovers that he is floating on Lake Wawanakwa. The cabin ends up on an island. Meanwhile, the other campers have different theories about their situation: Duncan thinks a rescue team will come looking for them soon; Gwen thinks the "stupid" producers of the show won't come looking for them; Heather thinks it's another one of Chris' sick challenges. Heather kicks a rock to prove it's just a prop, but only manages to hurt her foot. Back with Chris, he and Chef reunite at another campsite on the same island where the others are stranded.

Just to set the record straight, my sets are not cheesy! I lost three interns moving those rocks into place. And about that search party, nuh-uh. Those campers are on their own.

Meanwhile, Duncan and Gwen argue about whether to stay or build a raft and leave. Heather reminds them that they're not lost and that this is just Chris' lame attempt to test their survival skills by saying she's on to him, before leaving. Chris sarcastically says he's so scared in the confessional.

TDI Heather
Heather
Things were getting really tense. You have to remember that we were soaked, covered in bug bites, and starving; but I kept my wits about me, as always. It's a good thing at least one of us can remain calm and collected in the face of adversity.
TDI Owen
Owen
Okay, going to my happy place. I'm in the doughnut shop. There's an all-you-can-eat-for-a-dollar sale on. Unlimited chocolate milk. D'ah, go away! [smacking] Is that…

The confessional booth has landed on a shore, and Owen runs out to the beach where it has landed, but stops when he sees the gaping jaw of a T-Rex skull. Shocked, Owen returns to the safety of the confessional booth.

TD Chris
Chris
The T-Rex skull was my idea. [chuckles] Did you see the look on his face? That was worth every intern!

Heather finds a tree house. When she checks it out, she tells Duncan and Gwen that she's found a place to rest, but when she sees a skeleton in front of her, Heather falls to the ground. When she backs up, she finds the same T-Rex skull that Owen found, which scares her again. For Owen, his fear is finally overcome by his stomach when he sees coconut palms on the beach. Then Chris and Chef are seen together in the confessional, where Chef asks for an explanation as to why there are palm trees and coconuts in Northern Ontario, to which Chris says they are leftover props from the Bigassic Park movie shoot, adding that they are on a budget. Owen goes over and starts eating coconuts until there is left. He starts talking to himself and then to the coconut, which he calls Mr. Coconut, telling it that they will survive together, which will happen right after Owen pees, as he tells the coconut.

Back on the island, Duncan, Gwen and Heather argue about the skeleton and continue to believe what they originally thought, and while Duncan says that the producers will be looking for them, Gwen says that they aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. Back in the confessional with Chris and Chef, Chris says that he will let Gwen's little comment pass.

TDI Heather
Heather
I was so better off without those lunatics holding me back. Good luck lost in the wild without shelter.
TDI Duncan
Duncan
Okay, so maybe splitting up was a bad idea. I know I should make more of an effort to have an alliance with someone at this point in the game, but they're both insane. I mean, which one would you trust?

Eventually they go their separate ways. Duncan uses a bow and arrow he made to hunt, Gwen tries to build a raft to escape, and Heather moves into the tree house. Duncan shoots his only arrow into the air and it flies until it hits Mr. Coconut, leading Owen to believe that the island is inhabited by "headhunters". Duncan has no idea where his arrow went, makes a mental note to make more than one arrow next time, and switches to hunting with his knife, cutting up a voracious pack of wild bananas. Duncan collects a huge fruit salad of food and also discovers a nest with a large egg in it. When he returns, Duncan finds Heather eating a chocolate bar from Owen's stash that she discovered. Duncan wants her to share it with him, but she refuses, telling Duncan that it's every camper for themselves, pointing out that they are alone on the island, when a loud roar is heard in the background. Owen also hears the roar and cringes in the confessional. It turns out that Chef is making the noise by blowing on a conch shell as a signal that brunch is being served to the staff. Gwen finishes her raft and Duncan trades her the egg for a place on the raft, leaving Heather behind. Now all alone, Heather is terrified.

TDI Gwen
Gwen
Riding with him was the last thing I wanted to do, but I was starving!
TDI Heather
Heather
Okay, I have never been more terrified in my whole life. They left me there alone on that island to die. I had to draw on reserves of inner strength I never knew I had. If you're watching, Lindsay, I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings; you were an awesome friend. And Beth, ditto for you. Miss you guys. BFFs forever!

Owen leaves the confessional, now dressed like a longtime shipwrecker, complete with a tattered piece of loincloth, a long beard, and brandishing a plunger as a weapon. He sets out to take the fight to the headhunters, but instead finds the tree house and a terrified Heather, who tries to ward him off by throwing chocolate bars at him. The chocolate brings Owen back to his senses, and Heather is relieved to find a familiar, albeit bearded, face.

Duncan and Gwen realize where the egg came from.

On the raft, Gwen paddles in a big circle and ends up back on the island. When she returns to the island, she sees the remains of Owen's coconut feast and believes that the island isn't deserted after all. After failing to get off the island, Duncan gets his egg back from Gwen. However, a large pterodactyl flies overhead and swoops down to pick Duncan up. Gwen ties a rope around his ankle and is pulled into the air with Duncan. After flying around for a minute, they are dropped back to the ground just outside the tree house, reuniting the four stranded campers. As Owen gives everyone a big group hug, a large python falls out of the trees, forcing the campers to retreat into the tree house.

At the other campsite, Chris wonders what the campers are doing. Chef comments that anything could have happened by now: mauled by bears, fallen off a cliff, or starved to death. Worried about a possible lawsuit, Chris decides to check the cameras, prompting Chef to praise Chris for his dedication and inspiration. Back in the tree house, the campers ponder whether they are going to die here.

And that's when I thought, This is how I'm gonna die. My brain was actually going to explode from frustration!

Owen motivates the other campers before they go to where they saw smoke coming from.

Owen suggests that they confess their sins to clear their consciences. During the confession, Duncan reveals what got him into juvenile detention, which he says is not as bad as what Heather did, and — though a bit unorthodox — even that is not as bad as what Gwen did, "if that is her real name." After the confession, Owen sees smoke in the woods; the campers decide to take up arms and attack whoever is messing with them, but first they have to deal with the python waiting outside, so Owen throws Mr. Coconut, knocking it out.

At the other camp, the campers charge in with improvised weapons and war paint, scaring Chef, while Chris calmly welcomes them to their formerly secret production camp. Heather is angry that Chris and Chef were living it up while they were lost in the woods. The rain returns, and Chris and Chef retreat to their camping trailer; Chris claims he'd invite them in, but there's only room for six, even though there are exactly six of them, leaving them out in the rain.

"Don't worry, Mr. Coconut, I shall never let go!"

—Owen

At the campfire ceremony, Chris goes over the challenge and chews them out for splitting up, saying that four heads are always better than one; Owen corrects him by saying five, holding up Mr. Coconut. Chris then moves on to the marshmallows and has exactly four on the plate, which Duncan points out is a mistake since there are the same number of contestants, but Chris says the number is correct and hands them out to Heather, Duncan, Gwen, and finally Owen. To Owen's shock, it is Mr. Coconut who is eliminated. Owen refuses to let his coconut friend go, but Chris wrestles the coconut away as Owen cries and throws it into the Dock of Shame, telling Owen to get a grip on himself as it scared him. Heather then asks the other campers to keep their confessions a secret, and the others agree. As Mr. Coconut floats away, Owen can be heard yelling, "Don't worry, Mr. Coconut, I shall never let go!"

Trivia[]

General[]

  • When Owen is dancing and talking about his "Owen gets jiggy" fantasies, the music in the background is similar to that of an upcoming song from Total Drama World Tour, namely "Lovin' Time" from "Walk Like an Egyptian—Part 2".
  • It's quite possible that there was no actual challenge planned for the campers, since Chris only mentions that he had arts and crafts for them to do for the day, and no actual contestants were eliminated. While it is likely that Chris intended for the campers to be eliminated, he seems genuinely surprised by their absence at the beginning of the episode and amazed at their ability to find him and Chef despite being on the same island.

Continuity[]

  • This is the first time that a character who has not previously participated in the show has been eliminated. In this case, Mr. Coconut.
  • This episode marks the first time that Owen spontaneously and inexplicably grows facial hair; in this case, he grows a beard. The others are:
    • "Monster Cash" (Total Drama Action), when Owen spontaneously grew a mustache in the confessional.
    • He grows a beard again in "Top Dog" after being lost in the woods for two days, although the volume of his beard is probably exaggerated.
  • Not counting the recaps, this is the first episode without Geoff and Leshawna.
  • This is the third episode in which all the campers still in the competition use the confessional booth. The others are "Wawanakwa Gone Wild!" and "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon".
  • Gwen tells Heather that she should vote herself out.

References[]

  • This episode has several references to the movie Cast Away. Examples include:
    • Their names are almost identical.
    • It has a similar plot of getting lost on a deserted island.
    • Owen's friendship with Mr. Coconut is very similar to Tom Hanks' character's relationship with Wilson the volleyball, in that they are both inanimate objects that are fairly round, with a red face painted on the front and a small tuft of grass for hair. Both are the primary cause of their owners' mental instability, and both are thrown into the sea at the end of the movie and episode.
  • Chris mentions a dinosaur movie called Bigassic Park, which is a reference t0 the Jurassic Park franchise.
  • Duncan's makeup is very similar to that of Gene Simmons of the glam rock band Kiss.
  • The conch shell that Chef blows into and the campers dressing up as warriors and becoming practically savage by the end of the episode are possible references to the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
    • This is the first of two references to this novel in the series; the second is in "Top Dog".
  • The roar of the pterodactyl is the same as the roar of the giant monster Godzilla in the movie of the same name.
  • The incident at the beginning with Gwen, Duncan and Heather running out of the water is a direct reference to the Scooby-Doo cartoons, even using the same sound effect.
  • At the elimination ceremony, Chris mentions the valuable lessons the campers have learned over the past day, similar to Survivor. However, Chris mentions this before the elimination, whereas in Survivor it is done after the elimination.
  • At the end of the episode, there is a reference to the movie Titanic when Owen tells Mr. Coconut that he "shall never let go".

Goofs[]

  • When the campers fall off their beds and into the flood, Gwen's hair is dry, even though her whole head was in the water a few seconds earlier. In the next few shots, her hair is visibly wet.
  • Immediately after Owen and Mr. Coconut leave the confessional stall, Mr. Coconut is hit by Duncan's arrow, leaving holes in its sides. In all subsequent scenes, Mr. Coconut has no visible damage.
  • When Owen throws Mr. Coconut at the snake, Duncan and Heather have spears. However, when they are in the woods next to Chris and Chef's secret campsite, Heather has a plunger and Duncan has his bow and arrow.
  • When Gwen and Duncan fall from the big flying goose, they fall on a palm tree, but in the next scene, they are seen falling in front of Owen and Heather, where there are no palm trees in the area.
GwenCastways

Gwen's hair is more to the right than usual.

  • There are many times in this episode when Gwen's hair is not at its proper length:
    • When she is sitting on the step of the cabin with Heather.
    • When she stares at Duncan in shock after realizing why he went to juvie.
    • When Heather accuses her that "Gwen" is not her real name.
